Berlin, August 11, 2020 – In March 2019, the temporary timber-frame building, initiated by project developer and investor COPRO, opened on the site where the Urbane Mitte Am Gleisdreieck (Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck) will later be built. It serves as a blueprint for the urban quarter being developed there. The innovative overall concept of this pioneering project impressed the expert jury: B-Part Am Gleisdreieck was awarded the independent, internationally recognized quality seal "ICONIC AWARD 2020: Innovative Architecture – Selection" in the "Architecture: Special" category.
As an experimental laboratory, B-Part ("be part") creates an interdisciplinary, open meeting place for interested parties and park visitors by combining coworking spaces, a studio with free exhibitions in an urban context, multifunctional rooms, events, a café with a beer garden, and an outdoor sports park. The two-story timber building was designed by Scharabi Architekten; the interior design and parts of the interior fit-out are by Supersupply Berlin. The doubly curved structure was built using modular timber construction and, thanks to its wooden facade, blends harmoniously into its surroundings and the adjacent park.
“B-Part was and is a passion project. As a pioneer of the Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck, it was intended to be a meeting place for everyone. We took on this challenge, and B-Part has now been open for a year and a half. This project is an exceptional team effort and is already creating innovative and urban public space – which has now been recognized with an award.”
A temporary timber structure for the urban district of the future
Following the BRLO Brwhouse, B-Part Am Gleisdreieck is the second pioneering project on the site of the future Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck, designed to revitalize the brownfield site and make it publicly accessible. COPRO constructed the building using modular timber construction in collaboration with the Swiss company Renggli.
... “We gained our first experience in timber construction here – it was definitely a bit of an adventure. The prototype is up, and from our perspective, it was more than worth it. I am very proud of this award and thank everyone involved for this great success,” said Marc F. Kimmich.
A key aspect of the planning was the later reuse and repurposing, or dismantling and relocation, of this temporary timber structure (the principle of the circular economy). The climate-friendly timber structure consists of a timber frame, cross-laminated timber (CLT), and an untreated facade made of timber panels. Compared to a steel or concrete construction, around 350 tons of CO₂ are saved. The wood used also stores the same amount of CO₂.
The ICONIC AWARD was created by the German Design Council, one of the most important centers of expertise for design and architecture. The “ICONIC AWARD: Innovative Architecture” is the first independent, international architecture and design competition that considers the interplay of various disciplines. The seven-member jury, comprised of experts in architecture, interior design, design, and brand communication, recognizes visionary buildings, innovative products, and sustainable communication across all sectors of the architecture, construction, and real estate industries, as well as the manufacturing sector. The focus is on holistic production and the collaboration of different trades. Currently, the winners are scheduled to be honored on October 5, 2020, at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
