B-Part Opens at Gleisdreieck

With B-Part, the first laboratory for the urban district of the future opens at Gleisdreieck.

On the site of the future "Urban Center at Gleisdreieck," B-Part, a temporary timber-framed building, was officially opened today in front of approximately 200 guests.

Berlin, March 29, 2019 – Located directly adjacent to Gleisdreieck Park, B-Part now offers approximately 1,000 square meters of space for people who want to experience, explore, and help shape the living and working environments of tomorrow. The building consists of the "hardware"—the timber structure with around 100 workspaces for flexible, healthy, and inspiring work—and the "software"—the "Urban Ideation Lab" located within B-Part. The "Lab" offers six free, curated workspaces based on scholarships awarded to research future-oriented ideas and solutions for a livable urban district. Furthermore, B-Part houses a public café and spaces for art exhibitions; an outdoor fitness trail is planned. B-Part Am Gleisdreieck thus creates a meeting place for neighbors, residents, entrepreneurs, project enthusiasts, and art, sports, and culture lovers like no other urban laboratory in Berlin.

“Shaping Berlin’s Future”: Inspiring exchange on shaping the future of Berlin

Katrin Lompscher, Berlin’s Senator for Urban Development and Housing, and Marc F. Kimmich, owner of COPRO and founder of B-Part Am Gleisdreieck, officially opened the building. In her opening speech, Katrin Lompscher explained the impact such projects can have on Berlin: “Many projects and neighborhoods are currently being developed in Berlin. The ‘Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck’ completes a comprehensive urban redevelopment in the heart of our city. Where there were once only railway tracks, there are now new apartments and a wonderful park.” The project will be completed in a few years with a diverse neighborhood center. The B-Part project, as an interim use, marks the beginning of this development and offers an interesting opportunity for dialogue with all stakeholders committed to the common good. The city of tomorrow needs fresh ideas, numerous partners, and new collaborations. I am delighted about the B-Part project because experimental forms of urban development are crucial for our city, and I wish the new urban laboratory every success.” Marc F. Kimmich added: “With B-Part, we have achieved our goal of establishing another pioneering project on the site, alongside the BRLO brewery, which will enrich the area. This is based on the guiding principle of inspiration through participation. With B-Part, we want to make a positive contribution to the development of Berlin, both today and tomorrow.” Against this backdrop, Ansgar Oberholz, New Work pioneer, co-founder of St. Oberholz, and operator of the B-Part coworking spaces, opened the panel discussion on the question: "Shaping Berlin's Future – How can we jointly shape the future of Berlin?" Participants included Katrin Lompscher, Florian Schmidt, district councilor for the Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), and Dr. Meike Niedbal, Head of Smart City at Deutsche Bahn.

B-Part: Blueprint for the "Urban Center at Gleisdreieck"

"It has always been our intention that the vacant land on the 'Urban Center at Gleisdreieck' site would not remain unused until construction begins, and that we would offer added value to residents and other interested parties in many ways," said Marc F. Kimmich. With its diverse offerings, B-Part already embodies the themes that will shape the "Urban Center at Gleisdreieck" in the future. The project, on a smaller scale, is what the ‘Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck’ is ultimately intended to become: a place for people and businesses who want to change, develop, and realize their potential. Likewise, the ‘Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck’ will harmoniously unite all aspects of future living and working: new ways of working, mobility, supported art and culture, digitalization, and diverse sports facilities – in short, it will be a socially responsible urban quarter that embodies a love for the place and the city of Berlin.

Coworking, culture, sports, and gastronomy under one roof

Following the panel discussion, Berlin curator Rüdiger Lange led a tour of the art exhibition “Model & Sculpture,” which kicked off many more openings. Architect Janusch Munkwitz was responsible for the interior design concept and also ran the café, providing culinary delights. Gymnast and Olympian Philipp Boy was also present and offered initial insights into the B-Part sports concept. As a sports ambassador for the Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck, he aims to inspire Berlin residents and visitors to the Gleisdreieck Park area to participate in sports and promote a tolerant community. The fact that the B-Part concept has already succeeded in attracting initial users and interested parties is noteworthy.
