Circular Berlin, one of the fellow teams of the Urban Ideation Lab 2019/20—the laboratory for the urban quarters of tomorrow and the centerpiece of B-Part Am Gleisdreieck—is committed to the "Circular Economy" and pursues a vision of cities with a healthy and social circular economy.
In collaboration with EIT Climate-KIC, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Circular Berlin published the project report "Berlin’s Circular Construction Ecosystem" in December 2019 to promote resource-efficient material management. The project focuses on the ecosystem and stakeholders within Berlin’s construction industry.
Initiating circular and local construction presents the industry with entirely new challenges, and for most participants, this represents uncharted territory. Beyond technical hurdles, there is a need to rethink cooperative processes. For this future-oriented project, Circular Berlin conducted 18 interviews with experts from various stakeholder groups, including COPRO CEO Marc F. Kimmich, who felt it was a matter of great importance to support this initiative.
The interviews yielded significant insights and identified a list of challenges for Berlin (and Germany), which were compiled in the report as recommendations for action to transition toward a circular construction industry.
