Children's sports event at Gleisdreieck delights neighborhood

"Sports in the urban quarter" celebrates premiere at Gleisdreieck

Over 1,800 visitors enjoyed games, fun, and relaxation at the "Urban Center" area at Gleisdreieck over the weekend. This pioneering event demonstrates to Berliners how the area will be used after its development.

Berlin, October 16, 2017 – Whether playing happily or enjoying physical activity together, the "Urban Center" at Gleisdreieck in Berlin presented itself as an open sports and activity area for children and their families on Saturday and Sunday. More than 1,800 young Berliners between the ages of six and twelve, along with their parents and relatives, visited the specially constructed obstacle courses and play areas at the first children's sports event, "Sports in the Urban Quarter."

"It was great, it was good, there was a lot going on," is how Marc F. Kimmich, founder and managing partner of COPRO, sums it up. “Everyone had a blast, and we were able to show many people from the neighborhood how important sports are for the future district. The two-day event gave all visitors a first taste of the sports and community spirit of the “Urban Center” at Gleisdreieck.”

Until construction begins, COPRO is using the entire area as an experiential space for future uses. With such pioneering activities, COPRO aims to create space for diverse sports, arts, and cultural offerings on the “Urban Center” site right now. This time, various play stations, such as a bouldering tower, a bubble soccer area, a stuntman course, and a dedicated parkour workshop, provided physical activity and exciting entertainment. After all, sports are intended to play a key role in the planned living and working environment here.

Of all the play stations, the stuntman course and the bungee trampoline were especially popular with the kids. “Something like this nearby is totally awesome. It would be so cool if it happened here again soon,” said Theo (8). Eva Maria (11) was thrilled with the stuntman course: “The children’s sports event was so much fun. Especially meeting Philipp Boy – his tips at the stuntman course were really great.”

Philipp Boy Motivated Children to Achieve Top Performances

A special highlight for many of the young athletes was the meet and greet with Philipp Boy. The Olympian and former European and World Championship silver medalist in artistic gymnastics motivated many children to participate and ignited their passion for sports with tips and training instructions. “The joy of movement, of expression, of being alive – that’s what sport is all about, and it fosters community across all backgrounds,” Philipp Boy summarized his motivation.

“I’ve known Philipp Boy for a long time,” Marc F. Kimmich explained regarding the collaboration with the top athlete. “We want to use our enthusiasm for sport to unite people through the shared joy of movement and to promote a sense of health and activity.” For him, one thing is clear: “With this event, we've demonstrated what we want to offer Berliners here in the future. And it won't be the last event at the 'Urban Center' at Gleisdreieck. We want to invite even more people to get to know the area and feel at home here.”
