“Diversity in Architecture,” a non-profit organization founded in Berlin in June 2021, announced the creation of an international prize for women architects at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale.
At the book launch of WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE, hosted by the Fondazione Berengo, Venice, and attended by editor Ursula Schwitalla and her co-authors Odile Decq, Sol Camacho, and Dirk Boll, the initiators of this new international women's prize, Dr. Ursula Schwitalla (art historian) and Christiane Fath (architect), explained the goal of this initiative: “The aim is to actively promote greater gender balance among architects and to identify and honor role models for the younger generation of women architects. The Diversity in Architecture platform will increase the visibility of women architects and foster synergies among them.”

The Diversity in Architecture platform will strengthen the visibility of women architects and foster synergies among them.” Prominent figures like Lina Bo Bardi, the young Italian architect who emigrated to Brazil in the early 1950s and created extraordinary architecture in São Paulo, interpreted architecture as a social issue. She will be posthumously awarded a Golden Lion at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. "There are many female architects who deserve more recognition and visibility—a new prize for women architects is urgently needed!" demands Ursula Schwitalla. In 2023, female architects will be honored with this international prize for the first time. The jury, which will begin its work in 2022, comprises cosmopolitan and diverse experts from all five continents.
The founding members of Diversity in Architecture are strong women and (male) figures, including... Odile Decq (architecture) with Martha Thorne, co-initiator of VOICES of WOMEN, 2018 in Venice, Angelika Fitz (first female director of the AZW – Architektur Zentrum Wien), and Sol Camacho (architect and cultural director of the Instituto Bardi/Casa de Vidro in São Paulo). Further supporters include Dr. Dirk Boll (Christies) and Marc F. Kimmich (founder of the real estate developer COPRO): “It is time to make the architectural culture of female architects and planners visible. Their strength and contribution are an integral part of our culture and provide important impetus for the major changes and challenges of today and tomorrow. The female perspective is not only important, but essential.”
Before the jury's nomination process begins in 2022, Diversity in Architecture is seeking additional members. Application forms can be found under (become a) Member on the website.
