Pioneering building projects honored with Berlin award 2021

On July 19, 2021, the Berlin Award 2021 was presented by Berlin's Senator for Urban Development, Regula Lüscher, at a hybrid event. The award sought to recognize completed Berlin projects from the past 10 years that serve as positive examples of Berlin's unique urbanity and identity in the context of constant change, thus pointing the way to the future.

This capacity for change could hardly have been more significant in the past year and a half: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed concrete infrastructural weaknesses – but at the same time, it also revealed the strengths of a modern urban society. "The desire for public spaces and genuine community has probably rarely been as pronounced in our society as it has been after the necessary restrictions of the past few months," said COPRO Founder and Managing Partner Marc F. Kimmich. “Now the strengths of good architecture and deliberate project development are becoming apparent, creating spaces with and for people and thus paving the way for new forms of living and working – because urbanity only arises where people can live and work. We are pursuing this same goal with our neighborhood development project, ‘Urbane Mitte Am Gleisdreieck,’ which is why I am so thrilled about the award and gladly accepted the invitation to serve on the jury.”

The Berlin Award originated in 2010 as the Urban Intervention Award, initiated by the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing. Since then, it has recognized projects that create new, creative urban spaces of high architectural quality and leverage the synergies of diverse partners to develop sustainable neighborhoods and districts. This year, the interdisciplinary, eight-member jury, chaired by Regula Lüscher, awarded six prizes in five categories:

1. Infrastructure: SOS Children's Village Embassy for Children in Berlin-Moabit

2. Repurposed Spaces: Floating University Berlin in Berlin-Tempelhof

3. Repurposed Spaces: silent green – from crematorium to cultural quarter in Berlin-Wedding

4. Live Work Spaces: Am Lokdepot – Urban Architecture in Berlin-Schöneberg

5. Unusual Neighborhoods: LOVO Living Space Diversity Ostkreuz in Berlin-Lichtenberg6. Facilitation Processes: Quarter at the former wholesale flower market in Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

The winning projects will be presented in a digital exhibition and published in a brochure soon. Marc F. Kimmich Regarding the award ceremony: “I am particularly pleased that the jury members jointly selected the inner-city offshore laboratory ‘Floating University’ as the winner. It is impressive how much creativity, innovative spirit and commitment these young people bring to working on solutions for the major issues of our time.” The other members of the jury for the Berlin Award 2021 are:
