Scholarships for the City of the future: These six teams are developing tomorrow's Berlin

Berlin, August 20, 2019 – At the beginning of the year, Katrin Lompscher, Senator for Urban Development and Housing, and COPRO founder Marc F. Kimmich opened "B-Part Am Gleisdreieck" on the vacant lot of the Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck. The multifunctional building offers approximately 1,000 m² of coworking spaces, a public café, art exhibitions, sports facilities, and panel discussions, and was conceived as an experimental laboratory for the urban district of the future – both specifically for the development of the Urban Center Am Gleisdreieck and beyond.

The heart of the building is the "Urban Ideation Lab," which provides free workspaces for startups, entrepreneurs, and other interested individuals. These are awarded every six months by a special committee. After evaluating numerous applications, the six Lab Fellows, consisting of founders, volunteers, and researchers, have now been selected. Over the next six months, they will discuss and develop concepts related to the following topics: future mobility, new ways of working, digitalization, sports and health, art and culture, and social responsibility.

The Urban Ideation Lab Fellows are:

Circular Economy with Circular Berlin: Circular Berlin is a network of experts aiming to transform Berlin according to the principles of the circular economy. In various sectors, resources and raw materials are to be used as regeneratively as possible, thereby reducing or preventing waste. Dina Padalkina, Paul Anca, Georg Hubman, and Laura Konieczny are part of the network and work in the Urban Ideation Lab on the two major thematic areas of the construction industry and the food industry. Circular Berlin also applies its regenerative approaches to strategy and urban planning, product and material design, food and biomass, as well as textiles and fashion.

Digital Education with Tetrapix: The team around Marie-Luise Schade, Bastian Brabec, and Denise Sengül teaches students coding and making in a playful way through workshops. They understand digital education in the classroom as part of the necessary digital revolution in schools and want to embed it more deeply. Tetrapix stands for interdisciplinary and modern learning and acts as an interface between teachers, engineers, and designers. One existing partner is the non-profit organization "HOPP Foundation – for computer literacy & informatics," which aims to empower its student teachers and teachers to shape the world sustainably using digital tools.

Urban Mobility with RCKT: The Berlin-based digital consultancy focuses on the younger generation and will discuss the topic of "Urban Mobility" with students in the Urban Ideation Lab, giving them the opportunity to actively shape their city of the future. Paula Alexander, Anna-Stephanie Gurt, and Lara-Marie Nöh are responsible for the project. As part of their Lab Fellowship, they will collaborate with, among others, the Hermann Hesse Gymnasium in Berlin. RCKT started with 20 employees who knew each other from their previous employer, Rocket Internet. Today, the team consists of 60 employees. RCKT's clients include Commerzbank, Deutsche Bahn, and the German Federal Government.

Innovative urban development with the Urban Participation Lab: Justus Schuchardt and Oskar Nikolas Lingk combine urban planning expertise with modern technology and support urban development projects with digital participation. Specifically, surveys are used to create snapshots of public sentiment, analyzing existing buildings, the significance of urban projects, and their potential in order to develop concrete design recommendations. The team is currently supporting a research project in collaboration with GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) and TU Berlin to improve environmental awareness in three Indian cities. They are also helping the cities of Bremen and Hamburg achieve more sustainable urban development.

Social research with nexTT: The team led by Nicolas Bourquin and Sven Ehmann is using the Urban Ideation Lab Fellowship to explore the possibilities of a climate-positive urban lifestyle in the neighborhood surrounding the Gleisdreieck area. Together with experts, they are developing concepts, scenarios, and prototypes to inspire society to act more consciously and sustainably. At the heart of their work is the creative, visual representation of information and complex relationships.

Academic work with Franziska Sahr: The master's student in the Urban Culture, Society, and Space program is focusing her thesis on the analysis of participatory processes, temporary use, and co-production.

Public events and panels are planned at B-Part Am Gleisdreieck to discuss the Lab Fellows' research priorities and findings. The first public Urban Ideation Lab event, focusing on "Learning from Spaces: Flexible Space Use as a Catalyst for Circular Business Models in Construction," will take place on August 22, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at B-Part Am Gleisdreieck. Panelists include representatives from the House of Statistics, the timber construction company Renggli Deutschland GmbH, and Circular Berlin.
