IT DEPENDS.
Reality is to think about space—whether conceived physically or communicatively. With “IT DEPENDS.,” her first solo exhibition at “B-Part Exhibition,” Düsseldorf-based artist Anna-Maria Bogner invites visitors to question their perception of space. Using three elements—drawing, installation, and photography—she shows that even when space seems predetermined, it is we ourselves who define it as such.
These three elements are not to be understood as parts of a single whole, but as separate components of the exhibition. What connects them is that each contributes to a readjustment of the visitor’s presence in space: first—unmistakable upon entering—is the central installation, consisting of elastic bands stretched multiple times through the room and fixed to the walls. Depending on body height, position, stamina, viewing angle, daring, or simple curiosity, the installation poses questions. Is it just one band or several? How often do the lines cross in the room? Do triangles arise? Quadrilaterals? How many? Can we step into, traverse, cut across the space outlined by the bands? Are we allowed to? Touch the bands? Are they elastic? Is the drawn space even a material space? What does this say about our perception? One thing is clear: the lines stretched into the room like a drawing exert a strong presence to which we must respond—gauging our own presence and negotiating with the space.
While Bogner’s installation asks in three dimensions how many spaces can exist within a space, the four-part work of tall-format drawings points out that this question also applies to two-dimensionality. Using pencil and pastel on paper—choosing and simultaneously questioning one-point perspective—the artist distributes vertical and diagonal lines across spaces that come into being only in the mind. The eye remains restless, searching, as it engages with the four sketched spatial constructions—until another image appears: as Bogner continues lines from one drawing into another, we realize we are not seeing four spaces but one—or is it five? Other combinations are conceivable. 3+2? 1+1+3?
The space we see in the landscape-format black-and-white photograph on the opposite wall works differently, yet likewise raises the question of its constructedness. As a non-specific place in non-specific mountains—one we have all seen in some form, in images or in person—the perceived space already exists within us, triggering connections among spatial imagination, memory, and perception. As a code, the image speaks of “landscape”; and the white line running across the motif points to the fact that landscape corresponds more to subjective imagining than to shared reality. Can this line be aligned with those in the drawings and the installation? It depends!
The B-Part Exhibition space accompanies the future development of Urbane Mitte Am Gleisdreieck with artistic autonomy, entering into dialogue with the overarching themes of the overall project—forms of new work, co-working, culture, and sport—and creating synergies among artistic, cultural, and social approaches. The artistic director of B-Part Exhibition is Rüdiger Lange (loop – Raum für aktuelle Kunst).
