Historic property shines in artistic light

Lighting Designer Moritz Wermelskirch Creates the light sculpture “Spatial Radiation” in the GLINT Building Complex

Berlin, May 22, 2017 – A light sculpture made of colored LEDs, projections, and light objects by lighting designer Moritz Wermelskirch now illuminates a retail space at the corner of Glinkastrasse and Taubenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. The exhibition, titled “Standard International #3, Spatial Radiation,” brings life for the first time to the GLINT building, which has been vacant for years.

“The illumination draws the passerby’s attention to a new presentation in a familiar setting – they see change and the familiar in one moment,” explains curator Rüdiger Lange, commissioned by COPRO and known as a pioneer in the field of “artistic interim use.” COPRO is providing approximately 100 square meters of space on the ground floor of GLINT for the installation, in the space formerly occupied by the Thuringian butcher shop.

Diverse perspectives from different directions.

Several small windows, nearly floor-to-ceiling shop windows, and the glass entrance door allow a view of the installation inside the unfinished building from the outside. "Viewing from different angles changes the play of light and shadow. New impressions constantly emerge," explains Moritz Wermelskirch. "The design with the colored light sources makes the space appear—quite literally—in a new light for the viewer," explains Marc F. Kimmich, art enthusiast and founder and managing partner of COPRO. The windows opposite also reflect the red rods, a floating blue ring, and blue and red illuminated projections. For the viewer, this blurs the boundaries between urban exterior and interior, and the light art is effortlessly integrated into the building's historical setting.

Following the five-week exhibition period, an apartment store with rotating events, designed and implemented by Bothmer Architects, will open on the ground floor. On the first floor, art enthusiasts will find further exhibitions in an area of approximately 450 square meters. These exhibitions, titled "Standard International #3, Spatial Radiation," will be curated by Rüdiger Lange on behalf of COPRO. In this way, COPRO continues the tradition of the "Standard International #1" and "Standard International #2" art exhibitions at the Geisberg Berlin building in Schöneberg.
